GIELOW, MARY REESER Dec. 14, 1925 to Dec. 19, 2011 Mary Reeser Gielow passed away peacefully at home with her family on Dec 19th. She was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and moved to California at an early age with her mother and two brothers. She grew up happily in various parts of Los Angeles, a petite tomboy with two brothers who doted on her. In 1950, she married a Merchant Marine, Melvin H. Gielow. In 1959, the Gielow family, which now included two children, moved to Point Loma. Mary's joys and passions in life were her family and her home, gardening, entertaining, and playing bridge. As a member of the Peninsula Women's Club, she volunteered for and contributed to several charities using her special skills in organizing, cooking and decorating for fund raising events. Mary loved Siamese cats, big band music, and a good rhubarb pie. At 14, she was diagnosed with epilepsy, which put an end to her dreams of being a teacher. But Mary never allowed it to define who she was. After the death of her husband in 1980, she was able to become a teacher of bridge, holding informal bridge lessons in her home. Her gifts in life were an ability to turn the everyday into something special. Mary had a talent and an eye for creating beauty and harmony in everything she touched; her home and garden were always welcoming and harmonious. She will be missed for her vivacious (some call if feisty!) spirit and genuine warmth and caring. Mary is survived by her brother, H.C. Reeser III, her son Karl Gielow, daughter Kristine (Tina Gielow) Puzel, granddaughters Darrian and Jillian , and numerous extended family members. Services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to Peninsula Shepherd Center, 1475 Catalina Blvd., SD, CA 92107; or The Brain Observatory, 3510 Dunhill St., SD, CA 92121.
