Volunteer Driver/ Escort Program
As part of our Out and About Peninsula transportation program, PSC provides volunteer/escort service to ambulatory seniors in the Peninsula communities of Point Loma, Ocean Beach and Midway/Sports Arena areas of the City of San Diego. Transportation is primarily provided to and from medical appointments, which involves escorting the client to the appointment, waiting for, and taking that person home.
The program began in 1986 with a coalition of local Peninsula churches. Currently, 12 churches and 35 volunteer drivers participate in the program, making it a huge success! Service is provided to ambulatory seniors sixty and older. In 2010, the Shepherd's Center provided 3000 one-way passenger trips for its 140 clients.
Through the new TransNet Senior Mini-Grant Transportation program acquired in mid-2009, PSC plans to broaden its scope of transportation services. The Center also provides a Senior Transportation Options list which is updated every six months and made available to local residents and their families.
Clients must be registered in our program to participate. There is no cost for the service; however donations are gratefully accepted.
We are always in need of volunteer drivers!
